What's After the Movie

Robert Bathurst

Robert Guy Bathurst, born **22 February 1957** in *Accra, Ghana* (then the Gold Coast), is a distinguished British actor whose career spans over four decades. After a peripatetic childhood that saw his family move from West Africa to Dublin and later to England, Bathurst attended Worth School before reading law at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he honed his comedic talents with the legendary *Footlights* alongside future stars such as Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson. Though he initially pursued a Bar Vocational Course, his passion for performance led him to abandon a legal career and embark on a full‑time acting path, making his professional stage debut in Michael Frayn’s *Noises Off* at the Savoy Theatre in 1983. His early television work included a cameo as Prince Henry in the original *Blackadder* pilot and a role in the inaugural episode of *Red Dwarf*, but it was the 1991 BBC sitcom *Joking Apart* – where he portrayed the witty writer Mark Taylor – that earned him critical acclaim and a Best Comedy Newcomer accolade.

Following the cult success of *Joking Apart*, Bathurst became a household name as the impeccably smug management consultant David Marsden in the ITV hit *Cold Feet*, a role he revisited in the series’ 2016 revival. His versatility is evident in a wide array of performances: from a fictional prime minister in the children’s series *My Dad’s the Prime Minister* to a dramatic turn as Mark Thatcher in *Coup!* and a memorable appearance as Sir Anthony Strallan in *Downton Abbey*. On stage he has tackled classics such as *The Three Sisters* and Noël Coward’s *Present Laughter* and *Blithe Spirit*, while his radio work includes the comic *Hut 33*. Married to artist Victoria Threlfall since 1985, the couple raise four daughters, and Bathurst continues to enrich British television, film, and theatre with his nuanced and charismatic portrayals.
