Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, rose from humble origins to become the first Jesuit and the first Latin‑American pontiff in modern history. The eldest of five children of Italian immigrants Mario José Bergoglio and Regina María Sívori, he survived a severe bout of pneumonia at age 21, an experience that deepened his spiritual resolve. After entering the Society of Jesus in 1958, he earned a licentiate in philosophy and later taught literature and psychology before being ordained a priest on 13 December 1969 by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano. From 1973 to 1979 he served as the provincial superior of the Jesuits in Argentina, a period marked by the country's turbulent military dictatorship, during which he quietly aided victims and later clarified his role in complex rescue efforts. Elevated to the episcopate in 1992 as auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires and titular bishop of Auca, he was appointed co‑adjutor archbishop in 1997 and succeeded as Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, simultaneously becoming the ordinary for the Eastern Catholic rites in the nation. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal in 2001, assigning him the title of San Roberto Bellarmino, and he later presided over the Argentine Episcopal Conference (2005‑2011). On 13 March 2013, the conclave elected him Pope, where he chose the name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, emphasizing mercy, humility, and a preferential option for the poor. His papacy reshaped Vatican culture by residing in the Domus Sanctae Marthae, simplifying vestments, abolishing clerical bonuses, and promoting synodality, environmental stewardship through Laudato si', and a global dialogue on migration, economic inequality, and human rights. He fostered interreligious outreach, negotiated historic diplomatic accords with Cuba and Palestine, and advanced reforms of the Vatican Bank, while confronting the sexual‑abuse crisis with new transparency measures. Francis died on 21 April 2025, leaving a legacy of pastoral openness, social justice advocacy, and a church more attuned to the peripheries of society.
