Pedro Regas

Pedro Regas, born Panagiotis Thomas Regakos on April 18, 1897, in Hollywood, California, was a prolific American character actor whose career spanned over five decades in both stage and screen. Before establishing himself in Hollywood, Regas built a solid reputation as a veteran stage performer on Broadway, where his talents caught the attention of screen legend Mary Pickford. Recognizing his potential, Pickford personally persuaded Regas to transition to the burgeoning film industry, leading him to make his cinematic debut around 1920. Throughout his remarkable career, which officially encompassed the years 1927 to 1970, Regas became one of the most recognizable supporting actors in classic Hollywood, often cast in ethnic roles that drew upon his Greek heritage, portraying characters of various nationalities including Mexicans, Greeks, Arabs, Italians, and other Mediterranean or Latin American types. His ability to bring authenticity to these diverse roles made him a sought-after character actor during Hollywood's Golden Age, allowing him to work consistently through the transition from silent films to talkies and well into the television era.

Regas's extensive filmography includes appearances in numerous iconic productions alongside major stars of the era. He appeared in classic films such as Scarface (1932) as one of Tony Camonte's bodyguards, Viva Villa! (1934) playing Tomás, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), often uncredited but always memorable in his small but vital character parts. His versatility allowed him to work in various genres, from adventure serials like The Adventures of Rex and Rinty to film noir, war dramas, and Westerns. In 1943, he received a rare leading role in the Frank Buck adventure film Tiger Fangs, where he played Takko. Despite often being relegated to uncredited roles as waiters, drivers, henchmen, or ethnic villagers, Regas maintained a steady career that demonstrated his reliability and professionalism. He continued working into his seventies, with his final appearances coming in 1970 with roles in Flap and Angel Unchained. Regas passed away on August 10, 1974, at the age of 77 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, succumbing to a heart attack, and was laid to rest at the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy as one of Hollywood's most durable and hardworking character actors.
