Pauline Black

Born Belinda Magnus on 23 October 1953 in Romford, Essex, England, Pauline Black grew up amid a uniquely layered heritage – the daughter of an Anglo‑Jewish teenage mother and a Nigerian father who was a Yoruba prince. Adopted by a white middle‑aged couple and renamed Pauline Vickers, she remained unaware of her Jewish roots until she was 42, a discovery that deepened her understanding of identity and belonging. After studying science at Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University) and training as a radiographer, she spent five years working for the NHS before the pull of music proved irresistible. In the late 1970s she co‑founded the seminal 2 Tone ska revival band The Selecter, adopting the surname Black to veil her involvement from her employer and to comment on the colour‑based labels of her upbringing. The band’s explosive debut, Too Much Pressure, sparked a cultural movement alongside The Specials and Madness, and Black’s bewitching soprano – hailed by Rolling Stone as the finest voice to ever grace a 2‑Tone record – propelled hits such as “On My Radio” and “Three Minute Hero” into the UK Top 40. Her stage presence blended dramatic panache with soulful delivery, making her a defining figure of the era.
