After secondary education, McGillion pursued a degree in teaching from Brock University, where he also made waves as part of the national championship-winning wrestling team. After finishing his education, he commenced his career teaching theatre in Toronto, and also participated in auditions, before finally relocating to Vancouver, thus embarking on his adventure in the world of acting. *McGillion taught scene study at the Vancouver Film School in 1998 and 1999. *He kickstarted his acting career in the television series Stargate Atlantis in the role of Dr. Carson Beckett. *He has starred in multiple films such as 'The Traveler with Val Kilmer', 'Confined with Emma Caulfield', 'The Deal with Christian Slater', and in the 2003 multi-award-winning film 'See Grace Fly'. *His performance in the short film 'A Fine Young Man' met with huge acclaim, bagging the Leo Awards for Best Short Film and Lead Actor for McGillion. *Although he couldn't get the role of Montgomery Scott in the 2009 Star Trek film despite his enthusiasm and endorsement from Chris Doohan, son of original Scotty actor James Doohan, he still made it to the film playing a different character.
