Paul Angelis

Paul Angelis (18 January 1943 – 19 March 2009) was an English actor and writer whose versatile talent left an indelible mark on British television and film. Born in the Dingle district of Liverpool to Margaret (née McCulla) and Greek‑heritage father Evangelos Angelis, he attended St Francis Xavier's Grammar School before moving to Glasgow for St Mungo's Academy. After a six‑year stint in merchant banking he pursued formal training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, later joining a children’s theatre troupe in London. Paul became widely recognised for his on‑screen presence as PC Bruce Bannerman in the long‑running BBC police drama Z‑Cars, appearing in 128 episodes, and for his memorable turn as the tattooed seafarer “Navy Rum” in the classic sitcom Porridge. He also guest‑starred in numerous series including The Liver Birds, The Onedin Line, The Sweeney, Bergerac, Coronation Street and Casualty, and his film credits span The Mini‑Affair, Battle of Britain, For Your Eyes Only and Runners. In addition to acting, Angelis wrote several BBC radio programmes, a television food show for TSW and a novel, demonstrating his creative breadth. Later in life he remained close to his brother Michael Angelis, also an actor who famously narrated Thomas the Tank Engine. Paul Angelis passed away on 19 March 2009 in Lambeth, London, at the age of 66, leaving behind a legacy of beloved characters and a distinctive voice that continues to resonate with fans of British entertainment.
