Orestis Makris

Orestis Makris was a distinguished Greek performer whose career spanned several decades of the twentieth century, leaving an indelible mark on both the theatrical and cinematic landscapes of Greece. Born on September 30, 1898, in Chalcis, Greece, Makris demonstrated exceptional artistic promise from an early age, which led him to pursue formal training at the prestigious Athens Conservatoire. His professional journey commenced in 1925 when he debuted as a tenor with the theatrical troupe of Rosalia Nika, showcasing his remarkable vocal talents in operatic and musical theater productions. This classical foundation provided him with a unique artistic vocabulary that would later inform his transition into spoken theater, as he subsequently joined the renowned Papaioannou troupe, where he began exploring more comedic and character-driven roles. During these formative years in the vibrant Greek theater scene of the 1920s and 1930s, Makris developed the distinctive performance style that would eventually make him a household name across Greece and establish him as a leading figure in the country's cultural renaissance.

Throughout his extensive career, which lasted from 1925 until his death in 1975, Makris became celebrated for his masterful portrayals of folk characters, particularly excelling in the stock role of the "drunkard", which he imbued with both humor and pathos while avoiding simple caricature. He passed away on January 29, 1975, in Athens, where he was laid to rest at the First Cemetery in a family grave.
