What's After the Movie
Noel Howlett (22 December 1902 – 26 October 1984) was a prolific English character actor whose career spanned almost five decades across stage, screen, television and radio. Born in the suburban town of Bexley in Kent, he entered the theatrical world in the 1930s, making his professional debut as Richard Greatham in Noël Coward’s Hay Fever, a role that showcased his classical training and natural comedic timing. By 1930 he was already tackling iconic parts such as Sherlock Holmes at the Northampton Repertory Theatre, demonstrating a versatility that would become his hallmark throughout a long and varied career. The post‑war period saw him transition to film, where he appeared in supporting roles in titles such as The Winslow Boy (1948) and Lust for Life (1956), often cast as dignified officials, judges or clerks that benefitted from his dignified bearing. His Shakespearean credentials were cemented at Stratford‑upon‑Avon in 1953, where he performed a range of parts from Old Gobbo in The Merchant of Venice to Gloucester in King Lear, sharing the stage with future luminaries like Donald Pleasence and Marius Goring. Television provided a new arena for his talents, and he became a familiar face to British audiences through appearances in programmes like Quatermass and the Pit (1958/59), The Avengers (1967) and Danger Man, often embodying authority figures with a subtle comic edge. Perhaps his most memorable TV role was the bumbling headmaster Morris Cromwell in the cult sitcom Please Sir! (1971), where his gentle exasperation made him a beloved figure among a generation of viewers. In addition to visual media, Howlett was an active member of the BBC Drama Repertory Company, lending his resonant voice to radio dramas such as the 1965 Paul Temple episode “Paul Temple and the Geneva Mystery.” He continued working into the 1980s, with his final screen credit as Archbishop Sudbury in John Wycliffe: The Morning Star (1984), the year of his death in Hammersmith, London. Throughout his extensive oeuvre, Noel Howlett remained a steady, reliable presence, embodying the quintessential British supporting actor whose contributions enriched every production he touched.
