Ned Wever

Ned Wever, born Edward Hooper Wever on April 27, 1902 in New York City, was a versatile American performer whose career spanned stage, radio, and early television. He came from a legal family, the son of a New York attorney, and received an elite education at the Pawling School before graduating from Princeton University where he led the Triangle Club and contributed to the campus newspaper and literary magazine. After college he entered professional theatre with Stewart Walker’s stock company in Indianapolis and soon appeared on Broadway in productions such as The Grab Bag (1924), The Second Little Show (1930), and Days to Come (1936). Wever’s resonant voice quickly found a home in the golden age of radio, where he became best known for portraying the British sleuth Bulldog Drummond in the eponymous series and for leading roles on programs like True Detective, The Wonder Show, and Grand Central Station. In addition to acting, he was a talented composer, writing show tunes for Broadway revues and creating songs such as “Spellbound,” “I Can't Resist You,” and “Trust in Me.” His musical skill was noted by scholar Jim Cox, who described him as “as talented a musician as he was an actor.” Transitioning to the television era, Wever made more than seventy appearances on popular series including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Bonanza, Perry Mason, Get Smart, and The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show between the mid‑1950s and early 1960s. He married Carla Wever, and the couple raised two daughters, Patricia and Pamela, while he continued to work in both acting and composition. Ned Wever died of heart failure on May 6, 1984, in Laguna Hills, California, leaving a legacy of multi‑medium talent that influenced early American entertainment.
