What's After the Movie
Naima Wifstrand (born Siri Naima Matilda Wifstrand on 4 September 1890 in Stockholm, Sweden) was a multifaceted Swedish performer whose career spanned more than six decades, encompassing acting, singing, composing, directing, and troubadour work. Raised by her mother on Fleminggatan, she entered the theatrical world in 1905 when she joined the respected Anna Lundberg Theatre Company, gaining experience in small parts across Sweden, Helsinki and beyond, despite having no formal acting training. Her true ambition lay in music, and she refined her vocal talents at the Swedish Royal Academy of Music before further studying in London under Raymond von zur Mühlen in 1910, which propelled her to become one of Scandinavia's most celebrated operetta singers. From 1913 to 1918 she was a leading figure at Oscarsteatern, and her breakthrough role as Countess Stasi in Emmerich Kálmán's Die Csárdásfürstin in 1916 cemented her stardom, earning admiration from contemporaries such as Greta Garbo. In the 1920s she performed in opera houses in Oslo and Copenhagen, and later settled in London where she pioneered early television appearances in the 1930s, showcasing her guitar‑accompanied troubadour songs to a new audience. The Swedish stage director Per Lindberg cast her as Mother Peachum in The Threepenny Opera in 1937, a production that toured nationally and highlighted her versatility. Although she was offered the title role of Mother Courage by Bertolt Brecht, political circumstances prevented her from performing it, yet she supported Brecht financially and with lodging during his exile in Sweden. Transitioning to film in the 1940s, she surprised critics with powerful character roles, which attracted the attention of Ingmar Bergman, who incorporated her into his ensemble from 1954 to 1961 and cast her in classics such as Wild Strawberries, Smiles of a Summer Night and The Magician. Throughout the 1960s she continued to work with major Swedish theatres, including Stockholm City Theatre and Gothenburg City Theatre, before passing away on 23 October 1968 in Stockholm at the age of 78.
