Mie Hama

Mie Hama, born on 20 November 1943 in Tokyo, Japan, is a legendary Japanese actress whose career spanned the golden age of tokusatsu and international spy cinema. She first entered the public eye while working as a bus conductor, when producer Tomoyuki Tanaka spotted her and offered her a screen test, launching a prolific film career that would encompass more than sixty titles by the late 1960s. Hama quickly became one of Toho Studios' most in‑demand talents, appearing in iconic monster movies such as King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) as Fumiko Sakurai and King Kong Escapes (1967) as the flamboyant Madame Piranha, as well as in adventurous fantasies like The Lost World of Sinbad (1963). Her most widely recognized international role arrived when she was cast as Kissy Suzuki in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice (1967), a part that required intensive English tutoring in London and resulted in her voice being dubbed by Nikki van der Zyl, yet the on‑screen presence cemented her status among global audiences. Beyond the silver screen, Hama transitioned to television and radio, becoming a respected presenter and later an author of fourteen books that explore folk art, environmental preservation, and traditional Japanese farming techniques. A passionate advocate for Japan's natural heritage, she owns a restored traditional house near Mt. Fuji, dubbed “Hakone‑Yamaboushi,” which she rents to visitors seeking an authentic experience of historic architecture. In 1969 she married Fuji TV executive Mitsuru Kaneko, with whom she raised four children before retiring from acting in 1989 to focus on family life, writing, and her environmental activism.
