Melinda Kinnaman

Melinda Kinnaman is a Swedish‑American actress whose career spans more than three decades, beginning with a striking debut at the age of thirteen in Lasse Hallström’s beloved film My Life as a Dog (1985). Born on 9 November 1971 in Stockholm, Sweden, she is the daughter of American expatriates Dee and Steve Kinnaman; her father, originally David Kinnaman, was drafted for the Vietnam War but famously deserted his post in Bangkok, a detail that adds a layer of intrigue to her family history. As a dual citizen of Sweden and the United States, she grew up navigating two cultures, a background that later enriched her versatile performances on stage and screen. Her half‑brother, Joel Kinnaman, has also pursued acting, making the Kinnamans a notable familial pair in Nordic cinema. After winning the Best Young Actress in a Foreign Film award at the 9th Youth in Film Awards for her early role, she honed her craft at the Swedish National Academy of Mime and Acting (1991‑1994) before joining the prestigious Royal Dramatic Theatre ensemble. There, she tackled classical and contemporary repertoire, delivering powerful portrayals such as Iphigenia in Iphigenia at Aulis (1995), Bianca in The Taming of the Shrew (1997), and Estelle in Sartre’s No Exit (2000).
