What's After the Movie

Masataka Kubota

Masataka Kubota (born 6 August 1988) is a Japanese actor who emerged from the modest surroundings of Kanagawa Prefecture, where he was the youngest of three brothers. Originally aspiring to become a vehicle mechanic, he enrolled in the mechanical department of Kanagawa Technical Senior High School before his mother encouraged him to audition for show business, a decision that led him to join Stardust Promotion. Kubota made his television debut in 2006 with Fuji Television’s late‑night series Chekeraccho! in Tokyo, and the same year he entered the film world through Yuki Inomata’s Humoresque. Despite early setbacks and frequent audition failures until the age of 19, a pivotal encounter with director Takashi Miike on the series K‑tai Investigator 7 (2008) revitalized his career and set him on a path toward broader recognition. Over the following decade he appeared in acclaimed NHK Asadora and Taiga dramas, notably portraying Taira no Shigemori in Taira no Kiyomori (2012) and the childhood friend of the titular character in Hanako to Anne (2014), cementing his status as a versatile talent. His performance as Light Yagami in the 2015 adaptation of Death Note and as Ken Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul (2017) introduced him to international audiences, while his collaboration with Miike on the Cannes‑selected film First Love (2019) highlighted his cinematic range. In 2020 Kubota starred as the male lead in the Asadora Yell, a rare honor for a male actor, and subsequently earned the Newcomer of the Year award at the Elan d’or Awards (2021) and Best Supporting Actor at the 46th Japan Academy Film Prize for A Man (2022). Married to actress Asami Mizukawa since 2019, Kubota continues to balance a prolific acting career with a growing presence in both television and film.
