What's After the Movie
Mary Clare Absalom (born 17 July 1892 in Lambeth, London) was a versatile British actress whose career spanned both stage and screen for nearly five decades. The daughter of George Alfred Absalom, she left a clerical job after a £50 loan enabled her to attend a dramatic school, debuting on the London stage at age eighteen in 1910. After two years touring the provinces, she returned to the capital for a performance in A Posy on a Ring at the Earl’s Court Exhibition Theatre and made her West End debut in Turandot at St James’s Theatre in 1913. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s she became one of Noël Coward’s favoured leading ladies, appearing in Cavalcade (1931) and later in Coward’s 50th play Waiting in the Wings (1960). Her theatrical repertoire also included the title role in Leslie and Sewell Stokes’s Laura Garnett (1936) and Agatha Christie’s Appointment with Death (1945). On screen, Clare transitioned from silent film appearances such as The Black Spider (1920) to prominent sound‑era roles, notably as Mrs Jeffcote in Hindle Wakes (1931) and its 1952 remake, as well as the stern baroness in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes (1938) and the unforgettable aunt in Young and Innocent (1937). She portrayed the eccentric detective Palmyra Pym in Mrs. Pym of Scotland Yard (1940) and continued to act in film and early television through the late 1950s, embodying mature, strong‑willed women who often commanded authority on screen.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mary Clare’s personal life was marked by a long marriage to Lieutenant Lionel Percival Mawhood of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, whom she wed in 1915. The couple raised two children—a son, Wing Commander David Vere George Mawhood, OBE, and a daughter, Rozanne, who trained at RADA and performed on stage before World War II. Clare resided for many years at Brunswick Square in Bloomsbury, London, and remained a respected figure in British theatrical circles until her death in Harrow on 29 August 1970 at the age of 78. Her legacy endures through a rich filmography and the continued appreciation of her contributions to the golden age of British theatre and cinema.
