Marsha Timothy

Marsha Timothy (born 8 January 1979) is an Indonesian actress, model and director who has become one of the most celebrated talents in contemporary Southeast Asian cinema. The youngest of six children, she grew up in Jakarta as the daughter of record executive Eugene Timothy and Erna Hoekwater‑Timothy, an environment that exposed her early to the entertainment industry and sparked her ambition. In 2002 a scouting agent from an advertising firm spotted her at Plaza Indonesia, and she quickly secured a contract as the face of Pond’s beauty products, launching a successful modeling career that included runway shows, television commercials and magazine spreads. Her transition to acting began with a supporting role in the adventure film Ekspedisi Madewa (2006), where she portrayed the archaeologist Sandhika, earning critical notice for her natural screen presence. The following year she headlined the romantic drama Merah Itu Cinta opposite Gary Iskak, a performance that brought her a nomination for the prestigious Citra Award for Best Actress. She continued to expand her range with a chilling turn as Talyda in Joko Anwar’s psychological thriller The Forbidden Door (2009), and later delivered a harrowing portrayal of a housewife living with AIDS in Nada Untuk Asa (2015), another Citra‑nomination that cemented her reputation for courageous, emotionally resonant work. Timothy’s breakthrough arrived with the title role in Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts (2017), a film that premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and earned her the Best Actress prize at the Sitges Film Festival as well as the Citra Award for Best Actress at the 2018 Indonesian Film Festival. In 2022 she returned to the small screen, starring as Ambarwati in the adaptation of the classic soap opera The Red Point of Marriage, a performance that secured her a fourth Citra nomination. Off‑screen, Marsha married fellow actor Vino G. Bastian in October 2012 and gave birth to their daughter Jizzy in July 2013, balancing a thriving family life with a demanding artistic career that continues to influence the region’s cinematic landscape.
