Mark Borchardt

Mark Borchardt (born August 20, 1966) is an American independent filmmaker and actor best known for being the charismatic subject of the cult documentary American Movie. He was raised in the modest suburb of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, where his Swedish‑heritage mother Monica encouraged his early fascination with moving images. At fourteen he received a Super‑8 camera from a neighbor and began experimenting with short narratives, laying the groundwork for a lifelong devotion to low‑budget horror and experimental cinema. After completing high school he served three years in the United States military, an experience that briefly paused his artistic pursuits but deepened his discipline and storytelling grit. Returning to civil life, Borchardt enrolled at a local university and continued to produce radio dramas for Milwaukee’s Halloween celebrations, earning a fellowship from the Milwaukee Art Futures Board for his inventive productions. In the mid‑1990s he embarked on an ambitious feature project titled Northwestern, only to see the financing collapse and redirect his efforts toward completing the horror short Coven (1997). Filmmakers Chris Smith and Sarah Price followed him during this chaotic period, and their footage became the foundation of American Movie, which premiered at Sundance in 1999 and secured a distribution deal with Sony Classics. The documentary’s success catapulted Borchardt into the public eye, leading to multiple television appearances, including five spots on The Late Show with David Letterman and a memorable cameo on Family Guy in 2004. He later co‑hosted the horror‑themed live special Night of the Living Dead: LIVE and partnered with friend Mike Schank on the Zero TV series Mark and Mike. As an actor, Borchardt has accumulated credits in films such as The One (2001), The Hagstone Demon (2011), and the partially animated comedy Hamlet A.D.D. (2014), often portraying eccentric or meta‑fictional versions of himself. Beyond the screen he contributes to Milwaukee’s radio landscape as a regular host of the weekly film‑discussion program “Cinema Fireside” on WXRW 104.1. In recent years he directed the documentary The Dundee Project (2018), a whimsical exploration of a Wisconsin UFO festival that screened at Slamdance, Fantastic Fest, and other venues. Despite numerous announced projects, including the long‑delayed horror feature Scare Me, Borchardt remains a steadfast figure in the American DIY film community, celebrated for his relentless creativity, self‑deprecating humor, and dedication to independent storytelling.
