Manuel Serrano Pulido, born on 10 September 1972 in El Masnou, Barcelona, Catalonia, emerged from the rich footballing tradition of Spain's northeastern region to forge a respectable career as a professional forward. Standing at 1.72 meters, this technically gifted attacker began his footballing journey in the youth academies of his hometown club Masnou before progressing to the prestigious Español youth system, where he honed his skills during the late 1980s. His transition to senior football commenced in the 1990–91 season with Segunda División B side L'Hospitalet, making his debut on 7 April 1991 against Manacor in spectacular fashion by scoring as a second-half substitute in a commanding 6–1 victory. During his four-year tenure at L'Hospitalet, Serrano established himself as a prolific scorer, amassing 32 goals in 93 appearances while also gaining valuable top-tier experience through loan spells at Deportivo Alavés—where he contributed to their 1992–93 Segunda División B championship—and a brief return to Español, for whom he made his solitary first-team appearance in October 1993 against Compostela.
