Mamta Kulkarni

Mamta Kulkarni was born on 20 April 1972 in Bombay, Maharashtra, India, into a distinguished middle-class Marathi Brahmin family, with her father Mukund Kulkarni having served as the transport commissioner of Mumbai. She completed her education at St. Joseph's High School in Juhu, where she developed her passion for performance through active participation in school plays and cultural programs. She launched her cinematic career with the 1991 Tamil film Nanbargal, which achieved commercial success, before transitioning to Hindi cinema with the hit Tirangaa (1992). Her portrayal in Aashiq Awara (1993) proved pivotal, earning her the prestigious Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year and establishing her as one of the most successful actresses of her generation. Throughout the mid-1990s, she dominated the box office with starring roles in blockbuster hits including Waqt Hamara Hai (1993), Krantiveer (1994), the Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan starrer Karan Arjun (1995), Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), Andolan (1995), and Baazi (1996). Her career trajectory suffered a catastrophic setback during the production of China Gate (1998) when her working relationship with director Rajkumar Santoshi disintegrated amid serious allegations of sexual harassment and the controversial involvement of gangster Chhota Rajan, which severely limited her subsequent opportunities despite her appearance in the successful Chhupa Rustam: A Musical Thriller (2001). She ultimately retreated from the film industry following her appearance in Kabhie Tum Kabhie Hum, effectively ending her acting career spanning from 1989 to 2003.

Following her departure from cinema, Kulkarni maintained a long-term relationship with Vicky Goswami until 2016, and became embroiled in a massive legal scandal when the Thane Police named her as an accused in a ₹2000 crore international drug trafficking racket in June 2016, alleging her involvement in supplying ephedrine for illicit methamphetamine production. The Bombay High Court ultimately intervened in August 2024, quashing all proceedings against her and describing the case as "manifestly frivolous and vexatious," ruling that mere presence at a meeting constituted insufficient evidence under the NDPS Act. After remaining absent from public view for over two decades, she underwent a profound spiritual transformation in January 2025, announcing her sanyas and being appointed Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh, where she received the spiritual designation Shree Yamai Mamta Nand Giri and performed elaborate rituals including Pindadanam and Pattabhishekam. However, this spiritual appointment proved extraordinarily brief as Rishi Ajai Das, founder of Kinnar Akhara, expelled her from the position during the Mela itself, citing her alleged connections to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and accusations of treason against Sanatana Dharma. The controversy deepened in April 2026 when she made statements exonerating Dawood Ibrahim from the Mumbai blasts, sparking widespread outrage before issuing a retraction claiming she had been referring to Vicky Goswami, cementing her reputation as one of Bollywood's most enigmatic and controversial figures whose life spans the gamut from silver screen stardom to Hindu monasticism and international criminal allegations.
