Lyn Harding

Lyn Harding was a Welsh‑born actor whose career spanned more than four decades, moving fluidly from the provincial stages of Britain to the silent screen, talkies, and even radio drama. Born David Llewellyn Harding on 12 October 1867 in St. Brides Wentloog, Monmouthshire, he grew up in a strict Congregationalist, Welsh‑speaking household before abandoning an apprenticeship as a draper to pursue the theatre, a decision sparked by impromptu Shakespeare readings in a Cardiff chapel. A chance encounter with a touring troupe on a train in 1890 gave him his first professional break, leading to his debut on 28 August 1890 in The Grip Of Iron at the Theatre Royal, Bristol, and eventually a London debut at the Shakespeare Theatre, Clapham in July 1897. To make his name more accessible to English audiences, he anglicised Llewellyn to Lyn, a change that preceded his most memorable roles, including the menacing Professor Moriarty in several Sherlock Holmes adaptations and Dr Grimesby Rylott in Conan Doyle’s The Speckled Band (1910). His imposing stage presence made him a natural villain, and he toured internationally—performing in the United States, Japan, India and Burma—while sharing the stage with luminaries such as John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson and Anthony Quayle. Harding’s film work began in the silent era and continued into the sound era, but he never abandoned the theatre, delivering his final stage performance as Abu Hassan in Chu Chin Chow in 1941 at the age of 74. Near the end of his life he returned to his roots, portraying Owain Glyndŵr in a BBC radio production of Henry IV. Settling in Leverstock Green near Hemel Hempstead, he contributed to the local community by staging fund‑raising plays and revues, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to the performing arts. He died in London on 26 December 1952, aged 85, leaving behind a legacy of dramatic versatility and a reputation as one of Britain’s most compelling character actors.
