Lucille La Verne (born Lucille La Verne Mitchum, November 7, 1872 – March 4, 1945) was an American actress whose career spanned the late nineteenth‑century American stage to the early era of sound cinema, and she is best remembered for providing the chilling voice of the Evil Queen in Walt Disney’s groundbreaking 1937 animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Born near Nashville, Tennessee, she entered the world of performance as a child in local summer‑stock productions, and by the age of fourteen she was already tackling demanding Shakespearean roles such as Juliet and Lady Macbeth, a fact that announced her remarkable versatility to audiences and prospective producers alike. Her Broadway debut came in 1888, and over the next decades she became a leading lady for prominent stock companies across San Francisco, Boston, and other cultural hubs, eventually even running her own successful troupe. On the New York stage she earned acclaim for starring in productions like Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Seven Days, Way Down East, and the 1923 hit Sun Up, where she originated the role of Widow Caggle, a part that carried her through more than three thousand performances on Broadway, national tours, and a European circuit. In addition to acting, La Verne wrote and directed plays, and for a brief period a Broadway theatre bore her name in recognition of her contributions. A serious medical crisis in 1934 required reconstructive surgery on her rib‑cage muscles, yet she recovered and transitioned to the silver screen, debuting in the 1915 film Over Night and appearing in D. W. Griffith’s Orphans of the Storm. Her final screen appearance, the iconic voice work for the Evil Queen, cemented her legacy as the first Disney villain, a distinction that continues to influence portrayals of animated antagonists. La Verne died of lung cancer in Culver City, California, at the age of seventy‑two and was interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery; her previously unmarked grave received a commemorative marker after a 2020 fundraising effort, underscoring the lasting affection held for this pioneering performer.
