Luciano Pavarotti

Luciano Pavarotti (12 October 1935 – 6 September 2007) was an Italian operatic tenor whose powerful voice and charismatic stage presence made him one of the most celebrated vocalists of the twentieth century. Born in Modena to a baker‑father who sang as an amateur, he grew up in a modest two‑room apartment and initially dreamed of becoming a football goalkeeper before his mother steered him toward teaching and then music. After studying privately with Arrigo Pola and later Ettore Campogalliani, he made his professional debut as Rodolfo in La bohème at the Teatro Municipale in Reggio Emilia in 1961, quickly earning praise for his ringing high Cs and lyrical phrasing.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Pavarotti built an international reputation, appearing at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera, and winning acclaim for roles in Don Juan, Il trovatore and Rigoletto. His 1972 Met debut, in which he sang nine consecutive high Cs in La fille du régiment, secured his nickname “King of the High Cs”. The formation of the Three Tenors with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras in 1990 catapulted him into global pop culture, their concert at the Baths of Caracalla becoming the best‑selling classical album of all time. Pavarotti also recorded over 100 million albums, starred in charity‑laden “Pavarotti & Friends” concerts, and served as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. Despite health setbacks—including a 2006 pancreatic‑cancer diagnosis—he performed “Nessun dorma” at the Turin Winter Olympics opening ceremony, his final public appearance. He died in his native Modena on 6 September 2007, leaving a legacy of vocal brilliance, humanitarian work, and an enduring imprint on both opera and popular music.
