Elizabeth Anne Caplan, known professionally as Lizzy Caplan, is a renowned American actress with an illustrious career in film and television. She made her acting debut on well-acclaimed TV series Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000), following which she gained widespread recognition for roles in prominent films Mean Girls (2004) and Cloverfield (2008). Caplan later bagged leading roles on TV shows including Related (2005–2006), The Class (2006–2007), and Party Down (2009–2010; 2023). Between 2013 to 2016, she notably portrayed Virginia E. Johnson on the Showtime series Masters of Sex, for which she received a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Additionally, she starred in Castle Rock on Hulu in 2019, and appeared in films like Hot Tub Time Machine, 127 Hours (both 2010), Save the Date, Bachelorette (both 2012), The Interview (2014), Now You See Me 2, Allied (both 2016), and Extinction (2018). She is also known for the thriller series Fatal Attraction (2023) on Paramount+.
Caplan's personal life is as intriguing as her professional journey. Born in Los Angeles, she grew up in the city's Miracle Mile district as part of a Reform Jewish family. Her father, Richard Caplan, was a lawyer and her mother, Barbara Bragman, was a political aide. She lost her mother to cancer at the young age of 13. She attended Alexander Hamilton High School and graduated in 2000 to chase her passion for acting. Caplan got engaged to British actor Tom Riley in May 2016, and the couple married in September 2017. They have one son, who was born in 2021.
