Lillian Kemble‑Cooper (21 March 1892 – 4 May 1977) was an English‑American actress whose career spanned the glittering worlds of West End theatre, Broadway stages, and Hollywood’s golden age. Born in London into the illustrious Kemble theatrical dynasty, she was the daughter of stage veteran Frank Kemble‑Cooper and the sister of fellow performers Violet and Anthony Kemble‑Cooper. Her first professional appearance came in September 1914 as a chorus member in The Chocolate Soldier at the Lyric Theatre, a role that introduced her to the rigors of musical comedy and cemented her passion for performance. By the late 1910s she had crossed the Atlantic, joining the burgeoning American theatre scene and appearing in the original 1919 production of Hitchy‑Koo. Throughout the 1920s she became a familiar face on Broadway, praised for her poise and the aristocratic bearing that would later define many of her screen characters. Off‑screen, she married former World War I pilot and writer Louis G. Bernheimer in 1923; after his death she wed veteran actor Guy Bates Post, a partnership that endured until his passing in 1968.
