What's After the Movie

Lars Passgård

Lars Passgård was a Swedish actor and theatre director whose career spanned more than four decades, leaving an indelible mark on both screen and stage. Born on 14 February 1941 in Borås, he spent his formative years in the small town of Smålandsstenar, where his early fascination with amateur theatre sparked a lifelong passion for performance. In 1959 he entered the Malmö City Theatre’s training program, an institution that would later become the Malmö Theatre Academy of Lund University, and by 1961 he had already made his professional debut both on stage in Malmö and on film in Ingmar Bergman's acclaimed Through a Glass Darkly. This early exposure catapulted him into the limelight, earning him a role in Bo Widerberg’s debut feature Barnvagnen and even a part in the Hollywood production The Prize the same year. Throughout the 1960s he balanced a prolific film career—appearing in over thirty films and television shows—with vibrant theatre work, joining ensembles at SVT, Stockholm City Theatre, and the Royal Dramatic Theatre, while also captivating Danish audiences at the Royal Danish Theatre where his 1969 portrayal of Prince Hamlet in Aalborg drew critical praise. His dedication to the craft was recognized with the Daniel Engdahl scholarship in 1962 and the Thalia Prize from Kvällsposten in 1985, affirmations of his artistic depth and versatility. From 1986 to 1989 he served as drama director of Malmö City Theatre, guiding new productions and nurturing emerging talent, a role that reflected his transition from celebrated performer to influential mentor. Passgård’s life was tragically cut short by a brief illness, leading to his death on 16 March 2003 in Malmö, but his legacy endures through a memorial scholarship established by his mother Elvy, which supports promising theatre students at the Malmö Theatre Academy. His body of work remains a testament to a dynamic era in Swedish performing arts, inspiring future generations to pursue both dramatic and comic excellence.
