What's After the Movie
Lars Åke Rupert Ekborg (6 June 1926 – 7 October 1969) was a prolific Swedish actor, comedian and singer whose career spanned the post‑war golden age of Swedish cinema. Born in Uppsala, Sweden, Ekborg showed an early fascination with performance and eventually earned a place at the prestigious Royal Dramatic Training Academy in Stockholm, where he honed his craft under the guidance of leading theatre masters. He made his screen debut in 1944 with I Am Fire and Air and quickly became a recognizable face in a variety of genres, appearing in comedies such as Andersson's Kalle (1950), dramatic pieces like Encounter with Life (1952), and daring thrillers including The Yellow Squadron (1954). His versatility extended to voice work; in 1963 he provided the Swedish voice of Merlin in the animated feature The Sword in the Stone, demonstrating his talent for vocal characterization. Beyond film, Ekborg was also a celebrated singer and reciter, most notably contributing to the 1956 recording of Lars‑Erik Larsson’s Förklädd Gud alongside Elisabeth Söderström and Erik Saedén under conductor Stig Westerberg. In 1951 he married actress Lola Sjölund, and the couple raised three children, two of whom—Dan and Anders Ekborg—followed their father's footsteps into acting. Ekborg’s career, though cut short by liver cancer at the age of 43, left an indelible mark on Swedish popular culture; his blend of humor, musicality and dramatic depth continues to be celebrated in retrospectives of mid‑century Nordic cinema. He passed away on 7 October 1969 in Ängelholm, Sweden, leaving behind a rich legacy of over thirty film credits and a family that continues his artistic tradition.
