Kunio Murai

Kunio Murai (村井 國夫) was born on September 20, 1944 in the bustling port city of Tianjin, China, where his Japanese parents were residing during the wartime era. From a young age he was drawn to the performing arts, studying traditional theater before transitioning to modern drama. He made his on‑screen debut in 1966 and quickly became a familiar face on Japanese television, appearing in historic series such as Ten to Chi to (1969) and the long‑running detective drama Taiyō ni Hoero! (1972). Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Murai cultivated a reputation as a versatile character actor, taking on roles ranging from military officers in The Battle of Port Arthur (1980) to bureaucratic figures in The Return of Godzilla (1984). His film career was complemented by an impressive stage résumé; he originated the role of Perchik in the Japanese production of Fiddler on the Roof (1975‑1977) and later portrayed the imposing Inspector Javert in Les Misérables for over a decade.
