What's After the Movie
Karl Dane, born Rasmus Karl Therkelsen Gottlieb on 12 October 1886 in Copenhagen, Denmark, was a towering figure of the silent‑film era whose career spanned from 1917 to 1933. He arrived in the United States in 1916 with only $25 and a modest background as a machinist and mechanic, quickly breaking into motion pictures with a bit part at Vitagraph Studios. His early work included several anti‑German propaganda films such as My Four Years in Germany and the serial Wolves of Kultur, establishing him as a reliable character actor despite his limited English. The turning point came in 1925 when director King Vidor cast him as Slim in The Big Parade, a monumental box‑office success that vaulted Dane to stardom and earned him a lucrative contract with MGM. Paired with the diminutive Englishman George K. Arthur, the duo became one of the era’s most beloved comedy teams, delivering hits like Rookies and China Bound while Dane earned the astonishing sum of $1,500 per week at the height of his fame. However, the advent of sound cinema exposed his thick Danish accent, and by 1930 MGM had terminated his contract, relegating him to silent or minimally spoken roles and short‑subject comedies. The loss of his career, compounded by personal tragedies—including the death of his second wife Helen Benson and a failed mining venture—drove Dane into deep depression. On 14 April 1934, broke and despondent, he took his own life in Los Angeles, leaving behind a tragic legacy that underscores the harsh transition many silent stars faced. Despite his sad end, Dane’s work endures on DVD, his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame commemorates his contributions, and recent retrospectives in Denmark have revived interest in his remarkable, though fleeting, cinematic impact.
