What's After the Movie

Juliane Köhler

Juliane Köhler was born on 6 August 1965 in Göttingen, Lower Saxony, then part of West Germany, into a family with a theatrical background—her father worked as a puppeteer, which introduced her early to the world of performance. During the formative years of 1985 to 1988 she studied under the legendary Uta Hagen in New York City, attending the renowned HB Studio, while also receiving ballet instruction in Munich, a combination that honed both her dramatic technique and her physical expressiveness. Her professional stage debut came in 1988 at Hanover’s Lower Saxon State Theatre, marking the beginning of a steady presence in German theatre. From 1993 to 1997 she was a core member of the Bavarian State Theatre ensemble, a tenure she left when the demanding shooting schedule of Aimée & Jaguar conflicted with rehearsals for Das Käthchen von Heilbronn. After that, she returned to Munich to work with the Munich Kammerspiele, further cementing her reputation as a versatile stage actress.
