Joe Hurst

Joe Hurst (born February 4, 1964) is an American former professional basketball forward best known for his dominant stint in Australia’s National Basketball League during the late 1980s. A native of East St. Louis, Illinois, Hurst grew up playing the game on local courts before earning a scholarship to Northwest Missouri State University, where he competed from 1982 to 1986. During his collegiate career he was a first‑team All‑MIAA selection in both 1984 and 1985, and he left the Bearcats ranked in the top five all‑time for points (1,580) and rebounds (777) while also setting the school record for blocked shots with 153. An ankle injury in his senior year limited his final season, but his statistical legacy secured his reputation as one of the program’s most versatile big men. After going undrafted in the 1986 NBA draft, Hurst briefly joined the Quad City Thunder of the Continental Basketball Association in 1987, gaining valuable professional experience in the United States. He then moved to Australia, debuting in the NBL with the Hobart Devils in 1988; his impact was immediate, as he captured the league’s Most Valuable Player award and earned a spot on the All‑NBL Second Team, an unprecedented achievement for a rookie forward. Hurst returned to the Devils in 1989 before spending the 1990‑1991 seasons with the Hobart Hornets in the SEABL, and in 1992 he split his time between Devonport (SEABL) and a second stint with the Hobart Devils. The remainder of the 1990s saw Hurst explore European leagues in Iceland, Sweden, and France, while also competing in Australia’s Queensland Basketball League. In February 2001 he made a brief two‑game return to the NBL with the Canberra Cannons, and he concluded his playing career with the Mildura Mavericks in the SEABL, where he remained active until 2006. Beyond the court, Hurst’s legacy continues through his daughter Ahlise, who has followed in his footsteps as a basketball player, underscoring the family’s lasting connection to the sport.
