Jerry Mathers

Jerry Mathers, born Gerald Patrick Mathers on June 2, 1948 in Sioux City, Iowa, began his entertainment career at the astonishing age of two, first appearing as a child model for a department‑store advertisement and later starring in a PET Milk commercial with Ed Wynn. By the mid‑1950s he had already accumulated film credits such as The Trouble with Harry (1955) and The Seven Little Foys (1955), but it was his casting as Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver in the CBS sitcom Leave It to Beaver (1957‑1963) that cemented his place in television history. Mathers secured the role after honestly telling producers he preferred a Cub Scout meeting to an audition, a candidness that producers found perfect for the earnest young boy. Over six seasons he appeared in all 234 episodes, becoming the first child actor to negotiate a percentage of merchandising revenue—a pioneering deal that still yields royalties decades later. The series was syndicated worldwide, translated into forty languages, and continues to generate fan interest, with Mathers often recognized as “The Happy Boy” in Japan.

After the series ended, Mathers stepped away from acting to finish high school at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, later serving in the California Air National Guard from 1966 to 1969. He earned a B.A. in philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973, then worked as a commercial loan officer before launching a successful real‑estate development career. He returned to the spotlight in the 1980s with reunion projects like Still the Beaver and the follow‑up series The New Leave It to Beaver, and later appeared on stage in the Broadway musical Hairspray (2007). In addition to his entertainment work, Mathers has been a spokesperson for health‑related causes, authored a memoir in 1998, and remains an active participant in classic‑television retrospectives. His personal life includes three marriages—to Diana Platt (1974‑1981), Rhonda Gehring (1983‑1997), and Teresa Modnick (2011‑present)—and three children, Noah, Mercedes, and Gretchen. Despite a type‑2 diabetes diagnosis in 1996, Mathers has managed his health publicly and continues to engage with fans through appearances on MeTV and other platforms.
