James White

James White (7 October 1928 – 28 June 1999) was an Irish science‑fiction novelist best known for his compassionate and medically‑focused Sector General series, which explored the challenges of inter‑species cooperation aboard a massive space hospital. Born in Dublin to a middle‑class family, White developed an early fascination with both medicine and storytelling, interests that later merged into his unique literary voice. After serving a brief apprenticeship in a hospital laboratory, he pursued writing full‑time, publishing his first short story “The Long Remembered Thunder” in 1956, and soon after releasing his debut novel The Darkest Edge (1961).
