What's After the Movie
Iván Kamarás (born 22 December 1972 in Pécs, Hungary) is a celebrated Hungarian actor who gained international recognition for his portrayal of Agent Steel in Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). Raised in a family of ballet dancers—his mother Teodóra Uhrik and stepfather Pál Lovas—Kamarás spent his childhood backstage, developing an early love for performance that was sparked by a BBC recording of Hamlet when he was seven. By the time he entered high school he was already a regular member of an amateur acting troupe, and he later honed his craft at the Academy of Theatre and Film in Budapest from 1991 to 1995. From 1995 onward Kamarás became a fixture on the Hungarian stage, first with the Budapest Chamber Theatre and later with the Comedy Theatre of Budapest, where he tackled demanding roles such as Othello, Stanley Kowalski, and Raskolnikov, earning multiple critics’ awards and the prestigious Mari Jászai Award in 2006. His theatrical versatility extended to productions at the National Theatre of Győr, Pest Theatre and Szeged National Theatre, accumulating more than fifty documented performances. Parallel to his stage success, Kamarás built a prolific film and television career, appearing in Hungarian hits like Out of Order (1997) and Európa expressz (1999), as well as international series such as the BBC’s Silent Witness where he played detective Tibor Orban. He voiced the title character in the animated feature Ruben Brandt, Collector (2018) and continues to act in both Hungarian and English‑language projects. Beyond acting, Kamarás is an accomplished singer, releasing two solo pop albums, and a director, having created the experimental mobile‑phone film Sigh and directed Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin in 2009. Since 2012 he has shared his transatlantic training by teaching acting at Hungary’s first accredited school for movie actors, while also serving as an ambassador for SOS Children’s Villages’ “Keznyom” campaign. His dedication to sport, fitness, and charitable causes complements a career that bridges classical theatre, contemporary cinema, and education.
