What's After the Movie
Ivan Trojan is a celebrated Czech actor whose career spans more than three decades, and he is frequently hailed as one of the greatest performers in modern Czech cinema. Born on 30 June 1964 in Prague, then part of Czechoslovakia, he grew up in a theatrical family—his father Ladislav Trojan was a noted actor and his brother Ondřej Trojan a respected producer and director, which gave him early exposure to the stage. After completing his Master of Fine Arts at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 1988, he debuted at the Realistické divadlo Zdeňka Nejedlého and quickly became a staple of the Prague theatre scene, later joining Divadlo na Vinohradech in 1992 and the avant‑garde Dejvické divadlo in 1997. His stage work is marked by versatile roles such as Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire, Demetrius in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the father in The Brothers Karamazov, earning him multiple Thalia and Alfréd Radok nominations. On screen, Trojan achieved widespread acclaim with leading performances in Loners (2000), Želary (2003), Václav (2007), and In the Shadow (2012), each film receiving both commercial success and critical praise. He has collected a record‑breaking four Czech Lion Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role and two additional Lions for supporting roles, making him the most awarded performer in the history of the awards. In 2013 he won the Golden Nymph for Best Actor at the Monte Carlo TV Festival for the mini‑series Burning Bush. Beyond acting, Trojan is known for his dedication to Czech culture, supporting the football club Bohemians 1905 and even appearing briefly in a professional match in 2009. He is married to actress Klára Pollertová‑Trojanová, and together they have four sons: František, Josef, Antonín, and Václav. His continued presence in theatre, film, and voice‑over work, including dubbing iconic characters such as Marlin in Finding Dory, confirms his status as a cultural pillar of the Czech Republic.
