What's After the Movie
James Hugh Calum Laurie (born 11 June 1959) is an English actor, comedian, singer, musician, writer and director who first rose to prominence as half of the celebrated comedy duo Fry and Laurie. Raised in the Blackbird Leys district of Oxford and educated at the Dragon School, Eton College and Selwyn College, Cambridge, he studied archaeology and anthropology before devoting himself to the Cambridge Footlights, where he met Stephen Fry and won the first Perrier Comedy Award. Their collaboration produced the cult‑classic sketch series A Bit of Fry & Laurie and memorable roles in the historic sitcom Blackadder, where Laurie displayed his talent for both slapstick and nuanced comedy. In the mid‑1990s he transitioned to serious drama, appearing in films such as Sense and Sensibility and 101 Dalmatians, while continuing to write and perform music, becoming an accomplished blues‑style vocalist and multi‑instrumentalist.
Laurie's breakthrough on the international stage came with his portrayal of the misanthropic diagnostician Dr Gregory House in the Fox series House (2004‑2012), a role that earned him three Golden Globe Awards, two SAG Awards and ten Emmy nominations. After House, he returned to prestige television with standout performances as Richard Onslow Roper in The Night Manager and Senator Tom James in Veep, as well as starring in the sci‑fi thriller Tomorrowland and the Dickens adaptation The Personal History of David Copperfield. Parallel to his acting career, Laurie released two critically‑acclaimed blues albums, Let Them Talk (2011) and Didn't It Rain (2013), and authored the bestseller The Gun Seller. Honoured with an OBE in 2007 and a CBE in 2018, he remains a celebrated figure in both the performing arts and music, married to Jo Green with three children.
