What's After the Movie
Harland Reesor Williams emerged from Toronto’s Willowdale neighbourhood, the son of social‑worker‑author Lorraine Mary O'Donnell and lawyer‑politician John Reesor Williams, and grew up alongside four sisters and his brother Steve “Spaz” Williams, a special‑effects artist. After enrolling at Sheridan College in 1983 to study animation and media arts, he worked intermittently as a forest ranger at Fort Frances, a job that contrasted sharply with his burgeoning passion for stand‑up comedy, which he first performed in 1984 while still a student. He honed his act in Toronto clubs for seven years, developing a reputation for improvisational absurdity, before relocating to Los Angeles in 1992 where a 1993 appearance on Late Night with David Letterman gave him his first major break. The Farrelly brothers, impressed by his antics, cast him as a police officer in Dumb and Dumber (1994), launching a film career that would span comedic leads in RocketMan (1997), Half Baked (1998) and a memorable turn as the psychopathic hitch‑hiker in There’s Something About Mary (1998). Over the next two decades he appeared in a diverse slate of movies including The Whole Nine Yards (2000), Freddy Got Fingered (2001) and Sausage Party (2016), while also lending his distinctive voice to animated projects such as Robots (2005), Meet the Robinsons (2007) and the Nickelodeon series Robot and Monster. Beyond screen acting, Williams authored and illustrated a series of children’s books featuring a dinosaur named Lickety Split, and created the beloved Disney Junior series Puppy Dog Pals (2017‑2023). Since gaining American citizenship around 2009, he has continued to tour as a stand‑up comedian, host the free weekly podcast The Harland Highway, and make guest appearances on shows like Tom Green’s House Tonight and the Adam Carolla Podcast, where his talent for mimicking bird calls has become a fan favorite.
