What's After the Movie
Gordon Brown (born James Gordon Brown on 20 February 1951) is a British politician whose career has spanned more than four decades, encompassing roles as a lecturer, journalist, Member of Parliament, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Prime Minister, and United Nations special envoy. Born in Giffnock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, he was the son of a Church of Scotland minister and grew up in Kirkcaldy, where his early education earned him a place at the University of Edinburgh at the age of sixteen. He earned an MA with first‑class honours in 1972 and later a PhD in 1982, focusing on Scottish Labour politics, before entering academia as a lecturer at Glasgow College of Technology and working as a current‑affairs journalist for Scottish Television. Elected to the House of Commons in 1983 for Dunfermline East, Brown quickly rose through the Labour front bench, serving as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, and Shadow Chancellor before becoming Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1997, a post he held for a record ten‑year tenure. As Chancellor he granted operational independence to the Bank of England, reformed fiscal policy, and oversaw the longest period of continuous economic growth in post‑war Britain, while also navigating controversial decisions such as the sale of UK gold reserves and the introduction of the Climate Change Act in 2008. In June 2007 Brown succeeded Tony Blair as Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister, leading the country through the global financial crisis, instituting bank rescue packages, and introducing landmark legislation such as the Equality Act 2010. After leaving Downing Street in 2010 he served as MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath until 2015 and has since held a series of international roles, including United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education (2012‑present) and World Health Organization Ambassador for Global Health Financing (2021‑present). He is married to Sarah Macaulay, with whom he has three children, and remains an influential voice on economic, educational, and climate policy through his writings, public speeches, and advisory positions.
