In the early 1990s he joined the Peruvian dance collective Integro, performing in festivals across Latin America until 1996, an experience that enriched his physical storytelling abilities. Upon returning to Mexico, Taracena became a key member of the theatrical group Theater Myth and appeared in over thirty stage productions, showcasing his versatility as a performer. His transition to screen began in the mid‑1990s, and he quickly earned recognition for compelling supporting roles in films such as Apocalypto (2006), Man on Fire (2004), The Violin (2005), and Sin Nombre (2009), where his intense presence added depth to complex characters. In 2011 he co‑starred with Jaime Camil in the Mexican comedy Saving Private Pérez, demonstrating his comedic timing. Taracena’s television breakthrough arrived with the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico, where he portrayed the notorious drug lord Pablo Acosta, a role that introduced him to a global audience and earned critical praise. Throughout his career he was celebrated with honors including an Ariel Award, underscoring his contribution to Mexican arts. Tragically, Gerardo Taracena passed away on January 31, 2026, at the age of 55, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence that continues to inspire emerging actors and dancers across Latin America.
