What's After the Movie

Francisco Ribeiro

Francisco Ribeiro (15 March 1965 – 14 September 2010) was a renowned Portuguese cellist and a multifaceted musical talent whose career spanned composition, lyricism, vocal performance, arranging, and record production. Born and raised in Lisbon, Ribeiro displayed an early affinity for the cello, eventually becoming one of the founding members of the seminal group Madredeus, which blended the haunting tones of traditional Portuguese music with the subtle textures of contemporary folk. During his tenure with Madredeus, he contributed significantly to the group’s artistic direction and co‑crafted the evocative soundtrack for Wim Wenders’ 1994 film Lisbon Story, a project that highlighted his ability to translate cinematic narratives into melodic form. In 1997, seeking to deepen his musical expertise, Ribeiro relocated to England where he pursued formal studies in Music and Composition at Bath Spa University, supplemented by coursework at Gloucester Tech College and the Music Academy of Santa Cecilia. While in the United Kingdom, he performed with the Gloucester and Stroud Symphony Orchestras from 2002 to 2003, further expanding his orchestral experience. After completing his education, he returned to Portugal in 2006, where he remained an active presence in the national music scene, collaborating on a variety of projects and festivals. In December 2009, he launched The Junction Well, the inaugural album of his solo venture Desiderata, showcasing his personal artistic vision. Tragically, Ribeiro’s promising career was cut short when he succumbed to liver cancer in his native Lisbon at the age of 45, leaving a legacy of innovative contributions to Portuguese music and a profound influence on future generations of musicians.
