What's After the Movie
Ewa Fröling (born Eva Marie Fröling on 9 August 1952 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a celebrated Swedish actress whose career spans over five decades, encompassing stage, film, and television. She gained international recognition through her compelling performances in Gunnel Lindblom’s Sally och friheten (where she portrayed the title role Sally) and Ingmar Bergman’s acclaimed masterpiece Fanny and Alexander, in which she embodied Emelie. After graduating from the prestigious Sweden’s Theatre Academy in Malmö, Fröling joined the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in 1977, where she remained a core company member until 1988, delivering memorable interpretations in productions such as Alf Sjöberg’s Stiftelsen, Bertolt Brecht’s Heliga Johanna från slakthusen as Johanna, and the 1984 royal staging of Shakespeare’s King Lear in the role of Regan. Following her tenure at Dramaten, the 1990s saw her transition to Stockholms stadsteater, further consolidating her reputation as a versatile stage artist, before returning to the Royal Dramatic Theatre in 2005 to headline Kristina Lugn’s celebrated play Vera as the eponymous character.
Beyond the boards, Fröling’s screen work includes a diverse filmography ranging from early television series Katitzi (1979) and the family classic Peter-No-Tail (1981) (voice work) to the iconic Fanny and Alexander (1982) and the modern thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009). She also contributed her voice to the Swedish dub of Pixar’s The Incredients, bringing life to the flamboyant designer Edna Mode. In addition to her artistic achievements, she appeared on the popular Swedish dancing competition Let’s Dance in 2016, showcasing her charisma to a broader audience. Married to fellow actor Örjan Ramberg, the couple have two children, including media personality Tilde Fröling, and continue to influence Swedish cultural life through both performance and mentorship.
