Ethel Smith

Ethel Smith (June 22, 1902 – February 24, 1996) was a renowned American organist whose warm, rhythmic style helped bring the sound of the pipe and electric organ into mainstream American homes. Born in New York City, she displayed a precocious talent for music, receiving her first formal instruction at the age of eight and later studying at the Institute of Musical Art (now Juilliard). By the early 1930s she had secured a position as a staff organist for NBC Radio, where her lively performances of Latin‑flavored tunes and popular standards quickly captured listeners' imaginations. Her debut recording, "Tango of Paris," released in 1936, became a bestseller and cemented her reputation as a chart‑topping recording artist; she went on to sell millions of records throughout the 1940s, often featuring the Hammond electric organ that would become her trademark instrument. Smith’s charisma extended beyond the studio, leading to numerous Hollywood film appearances such as "Moonlight in Havana" (1942) and "The Great Morgan" (1946), where she performed on screen and contributed to soundtracks, further popularizing the organ in a cinematic context.
