Espen Skjønberg

Espen Henrik Skjønberg (7 April 1924 – 26 August 2022) was a Norwegian actor renowned for his extraordinary longevity on stage, screen, and television. Born in Oslo to the celebrated acting couple Henny Skjønberg and Eugen Skjønberg, he entered the film world as a child, appearing in the 1932 picture En glad gutt and the 1937 classic Fant, where his mother also performed. His theatrical debut came in 1945 at Chat Noir, reciting poetry, and he soon joined the Norwegian National Theatre in 1946, where he would embody 64 distinct roles over six decades, cementing his status as one of Norway’s most respected stage veterans. Skjønberg’s film career blossomed with a starring role in Vi vil skilles (1951) and later included collaborations with international stars such as Tom Courtenay, Nigel Hawthorne, Susannah York, Edward Woodward, Gérard Depardieu, Cliff Robertson, and Robert Mitchum in the 1995 production Pakten. He became a familiar face on British stages, particularly at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, delivering acclaimed performances as Ulrik Brendel, Odysseus, Shylock, and many others. In Norway he won a new‑generation audience through the soap opera Familiesagaen De Syv Søstre (1996‑2000), acting alongside his real‑life wife, actress Mona Hofland, and later enchanted children as the elderly mountain gnome Erke in Jul i Blåfjell (1999). His talent earned numerous honors, including the Norwegian Arts Council’s Honorary Award (1989), three Amanda Awards (1994, 2004, 2008), the British Theatre Association’s Drama Award, and the Knight, First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St Olav. Skjønberg’s personal life was marked by a long marriage to Hofland from 1959 until her death in 2010; they had no publicly recorded children. He passed away on 26 August 2022, aged 98, leaving behind a legacy that spans nearly a century of Norwegian cultural history.
