Ellen Schwiers

Ellen Schwiers (11 June 1930 – 26 April 2019) was a celebrated German actress and stage director whose career spanned more than six decades, encompassing theatre, film, and television. Born in Stettin, Pomerania, she grew up in a travelling theatrical family; her father Lutz Schwiers tutored her in the craft from an early age. Her professional debut came at the Theater Koblenz in 1949, and by 1953 she was engaged by Heinz Hilpert at the Theater Göttingen, where she captured critical attention in the title role of Lessing’s Minna von Barnhelm. Schwiers earned international recognition through world premieres at the Schauspielhaus Zürich, notably Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s Der Meteor and Max Frisch’s Biografie: Ein Spiel, and she became synonymous with the role of Buhlschaft in Jedermann at the Salzburg Festival in 1961‑62, a performance later captured on film alongside Walther Reyer. Beyond the stage, Schwiers appeared in more than 200 screen productions, ranging from post‑war German cinema such as Heimliches Rendezvous (1949) to popular television series including Tatort, Der rote Schal and Doktor Martin. She ventured into directing with Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the Burgfestspiele Jagsthausen and founded the touring company Das Ensemble with her husband Peter Jacob and daughter Katerina, a venture she sustained after Peter’s death in 1992. In 1984 she assumed the role of Intendant of the Jagsthausen festival, further shaping Germany’s theatrical landscape. Her later years saw her return to the stage at age 84 in the comedy Altweiberfrühling, performing alongside her brother Holger and daughter Katerina. Recognised with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Medal of Baden‑Württemberg, and the Deutscher Schauspielpreis, Schwiers left a lasting legacy as a versatile artist, mentor, and cultural icon.
