Dorothy Ford, born on April 4, 1922, was an American actress and model whose striking height of six feet two inches made her a natural fit for the visual allure of mid‑century Hollywood. Even before she stepped onto a soundstage, she began modeling, capitalizing on a legendary 38‑26‑38½ figure that caught the eye of showman Billy Rose, who made her the first woman he signed for the swimming chorus of his Aquacade at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco. Billy Rose recognized her unique presence, and after a seven‑month stint she transitioned to become a celebrated showgirl at Earl Carroll's revue, where she refined her performance skills for a year and a half. Determined to deepen her craft, Ford studied at the Actors' Laboratory Theatre, a progressive training ground that prepared her for a successful screen career. In 1944 she made her film debut in Lady in the Dark, and over the next two decades she appeared in thirty‑nine movies, ranging from wholesome teen comedies like Love Laughs at Andy Hardy (1946) to the fantasy comedy Jack and the Beanstalk (1952) starring Abbott and Costello. Her filmography includes notable uncredited parts as a towering beauty in The Thin Man Goes Home and The Seven Year Itch, as well as credited roles such as Coffy Smith in the Andy Hardy series and the receptionist/polymorph Polly in the 1952 fantasy. Beyond the screen, Ford’s personal life was marked by three marriages—first to James Sterling in 1949 (annulled after two months), then to tennis player Thomas B. Chambers in 1952 (divorced after a miscarriage), and finally to actor Hollis Bane, known professionally as Mike Ragan, with whom she remained married until his death in 1995.
