What's After the Movie
Dennis Franz Schlachta, known professionally as Dennis Franz, is an American retired actor celebrated for his gritty, nuanced portrayals of law‑enforcement characters, most notably NYPD Detective Andy Sipowicz on the groundbreaking series NYPD Blue (1993–2005). Born on 1944‑10‑28 in Maywood, Illinois, to German‑Polish immigrant parents, he grew up in a working‑class family and excelled in sports at Proviso East High School before earning a bachelor's degree in speech and theater from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1968. After college he was drafted into the United States Army, serving eleven months with the elite 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions during the Vietnam War, an experience that later informed his authentic on‑screen depictions of veteran and police life. Franz began his acting career in Chicago's Organic Theater Company, where he honed his craft on stage and performed Shakespeare, yet his imposing physicality quickly typecast him as a cop; by his own count the role of Sipowicz was his twenty‑eighth police officer part. His early television work included memorable performances on Hill Street Blues—first as the corrupt Detective Sal Benedetto and later as Lt. Norman Buntz—followed by a brief spin‑off series, Beverly Hills Buntz. In film he collaborated with auteurs Brian De Palma and Robert Altman, appearing in several of their projects, and delivered a standout turn as airport police captain Carmine Lorenzo in Die Hard 2. Franz’s award‑laden run as Sipowicz earned four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, and three SAG Awards, cementing his status as a television icon. After NYPD Blue concluded, he retired in 2005 to focus on family life, though he remains open to selective returns, having made cameo appearances in The Simpsons and the Dixie Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl” video, and works as a charitable advocate for colorectal cancer research.
