Danny Lee Wynter

Danny Lee Wynter (born 25 May 1982) is a versatile British actor, playwright, and activist whose career has spanned stage, screen, and print. Raised in Barking, East London, and later in a single‑parent household in Essex, Wynter’s multicultural heritage—Romany Gypsy and Italian on his mother’s side and Jamaican on his father’s—has deeply informed his artistic voice. He began formal training in performing arts at Middlesex University in 2000, studying clown under John Wright, before securing a place at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2003, where he balanced his studies with ushering duties at the Royal Court Theatre. This early immersion in the theatrical world led to his professional debut in Stephen Poliakoff’s BBC/HBO films Joe’s Palace and Capturing Mary (2007), performances that garnered critical acclaim and opened doors to prominent stage opportunities. His stage résumé includes the Fool in King Lear at Shakespeare’s Globe, roles in Henry IV Part I and II, and a lauded turn in the National Theatre’s revival of The Normal Heart, which earned him an Olivier Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.**

**Beyond acting, Wynter is a prolific writer whose essays have appeared in The Stage, The Huffington Post, The Guardian, and The Evening Standard, and he served as a columnist for Attitude (2017‑2018). In 2023 he debuted as a playwright with Black Superhero at the Royal Court’s Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, a boldly comedic and unflinching exploration of Black masculinity that he also performed in. A vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion, Wynter co‑founded the Act for Change project in 2014, mobilising industry leaders to demand broader representation across race, gender, class, sexuality, and disability. Openly gay since the start of his career, he continues to champion LGBTQ + rights, using his platform to amplify marginalized voices while maintaining a dynamic presence across film, television, and theatre.
