Crystal Kay

Crystal Kay (born Crystal Kay Williams on February 26, 1986) is a Japanese singer, songwriter, actress, and radio host whose career spans more than two decades. Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan to a Korean‑Japanese mother and an African‑American father who served in the U.S. Navy, she grew up bilingual in English and Japanese while also studying French and a bit of Korean. Her early exposure to music came from her parents, who took her to concerts featuring legends such as Diana Ross and Bobby Brown. Signed to Epic Records at age eleven, she debuted with the single “Eternal Memories” in 1999 and quickly followed with her first album C.L.L Crystal Lover Light at age thirteen. The breakthrough arrived with her third studio album Almost Seventeen (2002), which peaked at number two on the Oricon charts and earned a platinum certification, establishing her as a leading R‑B and pop artist in Japan. Over the years she collaborated with prominent acts like M‑FLO, BoA, Chemistry, and Namie Amuro, achieving her sole number‑one album All Yours (2007) and accumulating over five million records sold worldwide. In addition to music, Kay has acted in television dramas such as Hidarime Tantei Eye, voiced characters in anime‑related films, and starred in Japanese productions of Broadway shows like Pippin and Rent, earning a Best Actress award at the 27th Yomiuri Theater Awards. Her international ambitions led her to New York City from 2013‑2015, where she recorded, wrote over sixty songs, and cultivated a global perspective that informs her recent projects, including English EPs, cover albums, and collaborations with renowned producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. As a cultural bridge, she continues to champion diversity in the entertainment industry, shaping the path for future mixed‑heritage artists while celebrating her own multifaceted identity.
