Claudia Morgan

Claudia Morgan (born Claudia Louise Morgan; June 12, 1911 – September 17, 1974) was an American film, television, and radio actress whose versatile talent carried her from the Broadway stage to the golden age of radio and into early television. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to stage veterans Ralph Morgan (originally Raphael Kuhner Wuppermann) and Grace Arnold, she grew up surrounded by thespian influences, even counting celebrated actor Frank Morgan as an uncle. After attending Ely Court School in Greenwich, Connecticut, Morgan launched a prolific Broadway career, appearing in more than thirty productions; highlights included the original 1943 staging of Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians, where she created the role of Vera Claythorne, and a memorable turn in The Man Who Came to Dinner. Her Broadway momentum was occasionally disrupted by her demanding radio schedule, most famously when her Friday‑night performances as Nora Charles on The Adventures of the Thin Man caused her to be dismissed from the Christie play. Transitioning to screen, she made her film debut in 1932 and accumulated a dozen credits, culminating with a supporting role in the 1964 comedy The World of Henry Orient. In addition to Kraft Television Theatre and Robert Montgomery Presents, Morgan became a familiar voice on numerous radio dramas, including The O’Neills, Ford Theatre, Joyce Jordan, M.D. and The Right to Happiness. Her personal life was marked by five childless marriages—to Talbott Cummings, aviator Robert Shippee, Charles Hornburg Jr., actor‑architect Phil Ormsby, and finally W. Kenneth Loane—yet she remained deeply devoted to her craft until her death in Manhattan at age 63, and she rests in Brooklyn’s historic Greenwood Cemetery. Her legacy continues to inspire stage and screen performers alike.
