Claudia Drake, born Olga Gloria Fishbine on January 30, 1918, in Los Angeles, California, was an American entertainer whose career spanned from the golden age of vaudeville to the classic era of Hollywood cinema. Demonstrating remarkable precocity, Drake began her performing career at the tender age of three, appearing in comedy films alongside legendary silent film stars Fatty Arbuckle and Ben Turpin. By age five, she had formed the La Marr Sisters act with her older sister Ella, eight years her senior, captivating vaudeville audiences across the nation with their distinctive blend of songs, dances, and witty banter. During her formative years, Drake developed exceptional equestrian and marksmanship skills under the tutelage of her neighbor, the iconic Western star Tom Mix, who personally taught her to shoot and ride. Despite her early success, Drake temporarily stepped away from the spotlight at age twelve when informed she was too old for child performances, returning to formal education until the age of sixteen, when she made the pivotal decision to resume her entertainment career.

Drake's transition to film stardom began when she misrepresented her age as eighteen to secure a position as a chorus girl at Warner Bros. studio, where she notably performed swimming sequences as a stand-in for Ruby Keeler in the musical extravaganza Footlight Parade (1933). Following another stint in vaudeville with her sister and subsequent solo performances, she caught the eye of legendary choreographer Busby Berkeley, who discovered her singing in a casino and secured her a contract with Warner Bros. Drake became particularly renowned for her portrayal of leading ladies in Hopalong Cassidy Westerns, where she distinguished herself from previous actresses in the series by embodying producer Harry Sherman's vision of a "hard-ridin', hard-shootin' cowgirl"—performing all her own stunts without doubles or camera tricks. Her most enduring cinematic legacy includes her supporting role as Sue Harvey in the 1945 film noir classic Detour, a performance that remains celebrated among genre enthusiasts. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she appeared in numerous B-movies, predominantly Westerns, while also expanding her repertoire to include appearances in various American television series during the 1950s, cementing her status as a versatile performer who successfully navigated the evolving landscape of American entertainment from the vaudeville stage to the silver screen and the emerging medium of television.
