His early career involved building a foundation through minor film appearances, but he quickly transitioned to the small screen, where Westerns dominated the airwaves throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He is best known for portraying Officer Edwards in the popular TV series Highway Patrol, where he brought authority to the role of a law enforcement officer. Additionally, he gained fame as trail scout Clay Forrester in Rawhide, and later played William "Bill" Foster, Sr. in the long-running soap opera The Young and the Restless. Beyond these signature characters, Gray's extensive guest appearance credits include The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, Gunsmoke, Black Saddle, The Texan, Yancy Derringer, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre, Have Gun - Will Travel, Riverboat, Death Valley Days, Gunslinger, Laredo, The Road West, The Iron Horse, The High Chaparral, The Virginian, The Men From Shiloh, Bearcats!, Bonanza, and Alias Smith and Jones. He also appeared in television movies and feature films, including Junior Bonner (1972). After retiring from acting in 1979, Gray lived until August 2, 2008, when he passed away in Joshua Tree, San Bernardino County, California, at the age of 86.
