Brian McKnight

Brian McKnight is an American singer‑songwriter, record producer, multi‑instrumentalist, arranger and radio personality whose career has spanned more than three decades. Born Brian Kelly McKnight on June 5, 1969 in Buffalo, New York, he grew up in a musically rich Seventh‑day Adventist family, joining his grandfather’s church choir as a child and later forming an a cappella gospel quartet with his brothers. After moving to Orlando, Florida at age ten, he attended Maynard Evans High School and briefly studied at Oakwood College before being expelled for a dormitory rule violation, a setback that propelled him toward a professional music path. At nineteen he relocated to Los Angeles, signed a deal with Wing Records, a Mercury subsidiary, and released his self‑titled debut in 1992, featuring the platinum‑certified single “One Last Cry.” The follow‑up albums I Remember You (1995) and Anytime (1997) solidified his reputation for a powerful head voice, high belting range and melismatic vocal style, earning him multiple Grammy nominations despite never winning. His 1999 hit “Back at One” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became his signature song, leading to a series of top‑ten Billboard 200 entries including Superhero (2001), U Turn (2003) and Gemini (2005). Beyond recording, McKnight ventured into television with guest roles on Sister, Sister and Chicago, hosted various radio and talk shows, and performed national anthems at major sporting events. He has collaborated with artists such as Vanessa Williams, Mariah Carey and Mase, contributed to soundtracks, and participated in charitable reality shows like Celebrity Apprentice. In his personal life, he married Julie McKnight (1990‑2003) with whom he fathered two sons, later marrying pediatric neurophysiologist Leilani Mendoza in 2017; together they have raised five children, including a son who died in infancy and a son born in 2022. Despite public family challenges, McKnight continues to release music through independent labels, most recently Genesis (2017) and Exodus (2020), while maintaining a legacy as one of the most prolific R&B vocalists of his generation.
